"Laurissilva"
Several areas of the “Laurissilva” forest are part of Madeira 's Natural Parque, classified as a natural Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.Porto Moniz has one of the greatest areas of this forest in the whole island.
With
hydrophilic characteristics, it has about 145 endemically plant species and its fauna is very diversified in zoological groups.
Laurissilva keeps remains of forest from the Tertiary Era, and has a crucial role in the protection of the soil and rain infiltration.
In this rich native forest you can walk through the many “levadas” (water ways that where used to water plantations around the island) and existing trails. We recomend you to take a lamp, a raincoat and mountain boots, because some trips are long and dangerous.
