The name of the municipality proceeds from the name of one of its first settlers, Francisco Moniz. He had some properties over there and married a grand-daughter of Gonçalves Zarco, one of Madeira’s discoverers.
As years went by, Porto Moniz experienced a huge development, becoming an important touristic site of Madeira Island.
